03 Installing Host Linux SuSE 6.1 - Linux From Scratch 1.0
In this video the host Linux system SuSE 6.1 is installed.
Linux From Scratch 1.0 was released 16 December 1999: no, it's not a typo - I really do build the first release of LFS in these videos. This all came about after seeing all the older versions of LFS in the LFS Museum: https://www.linuxfromscratch.org/museum/lfs-museum and wondering if, in LFS's 25th year, it would be possible to build it and learn something along the way. The answer was yes to both questions.
If you wish to have a go yourself I've put together all the required packages (link below). Note that the glibc-crypt package is not included due to potential issues explained in detail in the videos and the tarball.
This would be impossible to do on modern hardware - the support for things such as SATA, NVMe, PCI-e, USB, etc. just didn't exist at the time or support was still nascent in the Linux kernel.
Therefore I sourced a contemporary machine from about two years prior to the release of LFS 1.0. It's an Intel Pentium 233 MMX with 64 MB memory and 80 GB hard disk. The disk and DVD drive are the only things that aren't contemporary but that fact doesn't affect the build in any way.
