Just tried out OpenSUSE Leap 16 and Agama Installer

Just tried out the new Agama installer for OpenSUSE Leap 16, and overall, I’m impressed. The setup process is clean and modern, but I did run into a small bug in the network settings — when connecting to Wi-Fi, the toggle that determines whether the system actually uses that network is broken. Clicking it eventually kicked me out of the session completely.

Aside from that, the rest of the experience was smooth. I tested Merlin, the new package manager replacing YaST, and it’s excellent — fast, remembers your last location, and feels like a real upgrade. Cockpit integration is another nice touch, giving a clean web interface for managing the system.

I tested this on one of my worst machines, installed Cinnamon, and had to swap out the default GNOME icon set for something a little less… 1990s. Also added Touchégg for gesture support — can’t live without workspace swiping.

My verdict?
Agama and Leap 16 feel like a solid step forward. I’ll be upgrading my Leap servers soon. With the new two-year release cycle, I might even start recommending Leap for some of my clients who need something stable but still modern.
