LaMelo Ball - 3 flaws - What NBA Franchises FEAR about him

The 2020 NBA draft has been delayed to October 16, 2020, but this has not dimmed the interest of prospective recruits and teams that want to add the best possible young talent to make them more competitive. One of the players that are likely to be highly sought and, according to most pundits, will not be lower than a 3rd overall pick is LaMelo Ball. LaMelo is an exciting prospect that has the skills and aptitude to dominate the NBA……. However, there are some concerns or flaws about his game that might impact how highly he is selected in the draft and the team that picks him. Here are 3 of LaMelo’s most concerning flaws.

One of the most significant flaws in LaMelo’s game is defense. Ball is an average defensive player at best, his defensive stance is poor, which throws off his entire defensive mechanics. This makes it easy for players to blow by him, and his man-marking game is literally non-existent. Ball seems to either lack confidence or commitment when it comes to defense, and this is extremely worrying for any team in the NBA who will invest in him to carry them forward. Ball is a defensive liability at this stage of his development, and this critical flaw in his game can result in him being picked much lower than most people think.

Despite LaMelo’s obvious offensive talent, another legitimate concern that NBA teams will have is Ball’s erratic shooting at times. He averaged a woeful 25% from the 3-point line and an underwhelming 45% percent from the 2-point line in the NBL. The encouraging thing though, is that Ball takes a lot of shots, which improves the probability of him scoring. His shooting accuracy will definitely improve as he gets more experience in the NBA. However, his shooting record will have some teams thinking on October 16, 2020, and it will be interesting to see if this affects his draft prospects.

LaMelo Ball’s game is centered around ball handling and him doing exciting things with the basketball. He is a creative player and an excellent dribbler of the Ball and thrives best in an environment that gives him a free rein to be himself. The question though, is …….. which NBA team will he be the best fit for? When we take a look at the teams that will get the top three picks: The Warriors, the Cavalier’s, and the Timberwolves, none of them have an immediate need for a player like LaMelo. If he goes to one of these teams, he might be forced to make adjustments to his game and might not even be in the starting line up if he goes to the Warriors. Ball is talented enough to adjust his game and still be successful in the NBA, but he has to be in the right team environment with a great support system from coaches and teammates to grow and become his best. The team that we think is the best fit for LaMelo is the New York Knicks, but they only have the 8th pick in the lottery draft. Could LaMelo Ball be drafted 8th? This is an unlikely prospect, but this makes the 2020 NBA draft something to look forward to.

These are some of the flaws in LaMelo’s game that teams might be thinking about before he is drafted.
