Traveling to northeast India in March of 2019 opened my eyes to what India truly is: a world within a world, and a true melting pot of people, cultures, and religions. The fifteen days I spent exploring the states of Assam and Meghalaya were an adventure I will never forget. I met amazing people, saw breathtaking locations, had wonderful cultural experiences, and ate some of the best food of my life! I’m thrilled that I get to share it with you in this video series.
After returning to Jorhat after a fun but hectic day on Majuli Island, my boy Rishi took me to his friend’s house, where we had an incredible, home-cooked Assamese dinner. Being invited into a local’s home while traveling is such a special experience. I couldn’t wait to meet them and dig into some Assamese fare!
I arrived at Rishi’s friend’s home and was warmly greeted by the family. We took some pictures and I joked around with everyone before washing my hands and preparing to eat. I loved the dad – he was amazing!
There was some betel nut there, but I personally don’t care for it, so I declined on trying it again. Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Rishi’s friend’s mom was cooking up a delicious-smelling feast that included dal, chicken pakora, and much more. While we waited on the food, I chatted with Rishi, who was super shy when we first met because he thought I was famous! But I’m not – I’m just a regular guy who loves what he does.
Then, it was time to eat! I started with pork fry, which was so juicy and insanely good! Then I tried the chicken croquette, which was also really tasty. There were also some really tasty potatoes and a phenomenal eggplant.
Next, I went with some mixed veg containing broccoli and beans, which was super nice and healthy. The pigeon with banana fruit was so unique and flavorful. There were some small bones in it, so it was crunchy, but so tasty! I also tried some super soft chicken with a wonderful gravy. It was also a little sweet! Everything tasted so good with the pork!
Next, I mixed some dal with rice, but it was too hot at first, so I let it cool down. Once I did, it was amazing! The best thing is, since you eat with your hands, it’s OK to lick your fingers while you eat!
Then I mixed some mint chutney with the rice. It was very nice and had a nice balance of spices. There was definitely some heat to it! Mixing the food with my hands gave it a whole new flavor.
Then I tried the fish. I had to be careful because it contained a lot of bones. I couldn’t help going but go back to the eggplant, which was so creamy on the inside. Then I tried some ghost chili achar, which is a little tangy and contains a minced chili. Next was a really nice, citrusy aloo with lime. I could taste the ginger in it as well!
Then I wrapped up with the crunchy papad.
After a brief break, dessert was served. It was made up of hard, rice flour “fingers” in milk with lychee and cardamom. I had never seen anything like it. It was really filling and sweet!
After dinner, I took more photos with the family. They were so kind and warm. What a wonderful experience! I can’t thank them enough for inviting me into their home and sharing their amazing food with me. I left feeling super full like a blimp!
I hope you enjoyed coming along on my Assamese family dinner at a local’s house! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment below. Also, please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming videos. I’ll see you in the next travel/food adventure!
