Drug impaired driving is a growing traffic safety threat in Taiwan

With drunk driving fatalities on a downward trend, Taiwan’s transport ministry is pivoting its enforcement toward drug-impaired driving, spurred by a surge in related deaths and the introduction of advanced saliva-testing kits.

Recent legal reforms enacted in April now permit preventive detention for dangerous driving and grant prosecutors the power to order compulsory blood and urine analysis for anyone failing initial roadside drug screenings.

Alongside a new public education initiative, officials emphasized that offenders face rigorous consequences, ranging from life sentences for recidivists to substantial fines for those who decline to cooperate with testing.
