Royal Scandals: The Lady Harriet Mordaunt Affair

Harriet Mordaunt, born Harriet Moncreiffe in 1848, was a Scottish noble entangled in one of Victorian England's most scandalous affairs. Married to Sir Charles Mordaunt, a baronet and MP, her alleged liaisons with high-profile figures, including the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), led to a sensational divorce trial. The case took a dramatic turn when Harriet's mental health became the focus, resulting in her spending 36 years secluded in private homes and asylums. Her tragic story culminated in her passing in 1906 in Sutton, Surrey, a poignant reflection of society's strictures and taboos.
