You may have considered using orthotics if you experience foot pain or discomfort. However, there is some debate around their use and potential negative effects, such as weakening the muscles of the foot and leading to a collapsed arch. Nevertheless, research has also indicated that orthotics can be beneficial when used appropriately.
Orthotics are custom-made inserts that provide support and cushioning to the feet, and are often prescribed to people who have flat feet, high arches, or other foot conditions that cause pain or discomfort. They can help redistribute pressure on the feet, provide shock absorption, and correct imbalances in the feet and legs.
However, studies suggest that foot orthotics can alter muscle activation patterns and lead to changes in joint kinematics, potentially affecting foot and ankle function as well as gait.
If you prefer not to rely on orthotics, there are other ways to strengthen your arches naturally. One option is to use thin insoles or small wedges to activate and strengthen the muscles that support the arch, including the intrinsic foot muscles and the tibialis posterior muscle.
One study found that using thin insoles led to improvements in foot muscle strength and balance, and that these effects persisted after the insole was removed.
In addition to using thin insoles, doing foot exercises like toe curls, heel raises, and arch stretches can also help improve foot strength and flexibility. Practicing good posture throughout the day is also important, as poor posture can contribute to foot problems over time.
