SWS Europe 2020 Keynotes - Science, Policy and Management of Wetlands In a Changing Climate

Presenter : Prof. Max Finlayson, President of SWS

Description - Recent research on the climate vulnerability of freshwater and saltwater wetlands is reviewed. It is well known that peatlands and vegetated coastal wetlands are among the most carbon rich sinks on the planet. Estimates of the consequences of rising temperature on current and future wetland carbon storage are discussed. Preventing further wetland loss is important for limiting future emissions to meet climate goals, but the record on this is one for alarm. There is an urgent need to prevent thawing of permafrost by disturbances and rising temperatures to protect wetland carbon stores and enable climate adaptation/resiliency. Policies from international to national, subnational and local levels are needed to form strategies for an integrated understanding of both wetland and climate change science. Specific recommendations are provided to capture synergies between wetlands and carbon cycle management, adaptation and resiliency, and to assist researchers, policy makers and practitioners to protect wetland carbon and climate adaptation/resiliency ecosystem services.
