How Fast did Beethoven and Chopin really Play? This TIMEMACHINE will tell you!!
If you would die to hear Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, or any other composer play their own works – and wouldn’t we all die to witness that- your journey starts right here. With a pendulum. A brilliant tool in its simplicity, predictable in its movements by the human brain in an astonishing accurate way and in its swings back and forth so close to the up and down movements of the arm, that gesture that we use so much in our daily lives as musicians and that guided our predecessors for centuries in their musical adventures. In this video, I’ll explain the connection with Beethoven Mozart and Chopin and the today's almost totally neglected treasures of information they all left, information that formed the foundational layer of their performances. Yes... their tempi. Mystified by the few scholars who push musicians to go faster and faster, on a never ending path towards unreachable heights of speeds, at first indeed being suggested by these often insanely fast metronome marks musicians like Beethoven, Chopin, and hundreds of other composers and performers left. But when looking closely, as mostly in music related matters, the foggy mystery disappears rapidly, since the solution of these metronome numbers (or tempo indications) just lies in front of all of us. For centuries. We only need to want to look. And perhaps say goodbye to the post Rachmaninoff era of virtuosity. At least if your wish is indeed to reconstruct a little part of that "Authentic Sound", the way Beethoven and Chopin might have played!
