THIS IS HOW MOZART CONDUCTED DON GIOVANNI IN 1787 !

Or kind of. Wish I would have been there though... Hope you like the touch of irony of the thumbnail and don't worry, it is not all click bait here... I WILL play you parts of the Don Giovanni intro in this video... Remember, this was the story: Tomaschek, born in 1774 was in Prague, in 1791 and witnessed Don Giovanni performed by the same orchestra the Mozart conducted his premiere with only four years before, in 1787.
In 1839, G.W.Fink published a very strong opinion piece in the Algemeine Musikalische Zeitung, saying the present generation of musicians were killing Mozart's music by playing it way too fast.
So he asked Tomaschek to give him the speed indiactions, the metronome numbers, as he remembered the 1791 performance. And so Tomaschek did.
Fink was happy with the metronome numbers, as he printed them as a proof how much slower the Prague 1791 performance was.
And now comes the tricky part.
Those Thomaschek numbers are... incredibly fast. Singers have to perform up to 10 syllables per second... and yet, no-one raised their hand to complain. They seem to have found those speeds quite normal. And not even that: they played even faster than that.
Genetically different people than we today? Another muscular system? Or is the solution to this "mystery" way simpler (as most mysteries are)?
Find out in this video. In the second part, I'll go through the introduction of this opera, with Tomaschek MM as a guide. They just work fine. But one has to have the effort of understand how to read them. It could be a shock to you, it certainly will be if you know don Giovanni well. But open your heart for this and you will find a way deeper level of emotion you ever though that music is capable of. Once you hear even only fragments of this a few times, you start feel irritated when the next time that intro is played so much faster than Mozart most probably, if not certainly, has meant this masterpiece to be performed.
