Some microbes produce a slime called Extracellular Polymeric Substances, or EPS. In the environment, EPS can make land more resistant to erosion.

Serena Teasdale, a scientist whose research looks at the effects of EPS of coastal erosion, demonstrates the difference this slime makes to the rate water washes away sandcastles.
