Betty Boothroyd, the first woman to serve as speaker of the British House of Commons has announced that she'll step down after the summer recess.

70-year-old Boothroyd who was elected speaker in 1992 and has been a politician since 1973, also said she would not seek another term in the Commons.

Boothroyd, a former chorus girl and member of the Labour Party was the first speaker to dispense with wearing a long white wig during ordinary sessions.

Insisting on the importance of being comfortable, she also wore a skirt rather than the traditional knee-length breeches.

Explaining her decision to retire now, she said it was best to step down during a parliamentary term to ensure all members of the house are "familiar with the qualities of potential successors."
