Conservation of a 16th Century portrait

This video shows the beginnings of conserving an early portrait, including:

- Cleaning off the worst of the perished varnish, dirt and residue from a burst pipe
- Facing the painting with protective tissue paper
- Removing old lining and glue
- Glueing and Ironing to new lining
- Removing facing paper
- Applying sulphite paper

About the portrait -

Sir Amyas Bampfylde 1551-1619

This portrait if of Sir Bampfylde in 1593, 10 years before he was knighted at Windsor. He was the sheriff of Devon from 1603 to 1604 and in 1616 he was Deputy Lieutenant. The painting was unfortunately the victim of a burst pipe.
