Nostell Priory painting conservation 2014

We take you behind the scenes to get a glimpse of the painstaking work that goes into the conservation of the paintings in the National Trust's care at Nostell Priory.

We follow the paintings as they are taken down from the Billiard Room and transported to the conservator's studio. We see some of the processes involved in cleaning, repairing and applying new paint to bring the paintings and their frames back to life.

A total of five paintings were included in this round of conservation but the video mainly focuses on:
Dr Charles Trimnell - Circle of Michael Dahl, 18th century, oil on canvas.
Portrait of Edward Henshaw - Circle of Jonathan Richardson the Elder, 18th century, oil on canvas.

Techniques covered include:
Removal of surface dirt
Consolidation of the paint and ground layer
Repair of front fold canvas splits
Cleaning of the reverse
Varnish and over-paint removal
Moisture treatment of distortions
Reversal of old tear repairs
Tear repair
Filling, retouching and varnishing
Video filmed and edited by Dominic Russell-Price
