Philippines is in the Heart: Wikang Kayumanggi -- Learning and Appreciating Tagalog Part 1
Foundation for Philippine Progress presents:
Wikang Kayumanggi: Learning and Appreciating Tagalog
Part 1
The Philippines is blessed with 7000 islands, like no other country in the world. And because of such uniqueness, there are about 180+ languages spread about among its people. Along with these regional dialects, TAGALOG is considered the second language spoken by the majority of Filipinos, although there is an ethnic group called the Tagalogs, along with the Ilocanos, the Bisayans, Kapampangans, Chavacanos, to name just a few.
Spend some time with local teacher, Roger Rigor, and learn the rudiments of the Brown Language (Wikang Kayumanggi). Appreciate the nuances of the language and some of its cultural aspects: its unique letters and accents; influences from the Spaniards and Americans; respect to the elders embedded in the form, the traditional, the contemporary “Americanized” expressions. In this novel engagement with the language, conversations tend to drift towards a peek at Filipino traditions, its history and the role of colonialism from Spain and the United States.
