Ep. 64 - Beginner Homestead Gate Hanging 101 | Blackacre Ranch

It's time for beginner homestead gate hanging at blackacre ranch. It is fairly simple in concept but some simple math needs to be performed or you end up making some rookie mistakes, much like I did. I installed a 14 foot bull pasture gate on our small holding pasture. We used gate installation kit hardware picked up from the local store.

The hardware you need will depend on the type of posts you have. Metal posts will let you weld it or use a threaded nut welded to the post. With wooden posts you have either use a lag screw that threads partially into the post or you can use an all thread and pass completely through the post and use a nut and washer on both sides. I used the all thread.

In general the process involves:
1) determining how high off the ground to raise the gate
2) deciding where you will put your clamps with the hinges on the vertical bar of the cattle gate
3) drilling holes where needed on the post to match the clamp locations. (this is where I made my mistake)
4) inserting (or screwing in the lag) the threaded bolt with the pin into the hole.
5) resting the cattle gate on the bottom pin and setting the top clamp onto the upper pin and tightening it all down.

I recommend using a gate chain that is a little sturdier and using a lock to keep it closed instead of just using the latch. Trim the excess bolt threads if needed.

Here on Blackacre Ranch we are weekend ranchers living in the big city during the week and ranching on the partially off grid property on the weekend. We are a family with 6 kids. Our goals are to homestead the property, grow healthy food, and build good character along the way. We are new to homesteading and don't know much about it, but we are willing to share our struggles and journey as we learn how to homestead together. Think of this as homesteading for beginners where we are the beginners.

We found the cost of an urban farm too expensive and went rural to find enough acreage to do what we wanted. We wanted larger animals such as bison and highland cattle. We are game for other animals with one requirement, they have to be sufficient enough to be handled only once a week. We found an old camp property that was run down and are remodeling or fixing it up to be a working and profitable ranch.

Now we can play with guns, blow stuff up, build what we want, and do what interests us. We are located in East Texas. Come with us as we enjoy the ranch life, even if only one day a week.
