Holland - Clinton and Kok address press conference

(28 May 1997) T/I: 10:16:57
President Bill Clinton said on Wednesday (28/5) that he would announce "new initiatives" to open up trade with eastern Europe, which he hoped would have the "same impact" as the post World War II-era Marshall aid plan that salvaged post-war Europe.
Before the wider talks EU executive Jacques Santer, Clinton and current EU President, Dutch prime minister Wim Kok, announced two new technical and trade agreements between the US and Europe - one on chemicals, and a customs co-operation agreement which should boost the annual 400 billion dollar trade between America and the EU even further.

SOT Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok (in english) "I'm very glad to say that we had very productive discussions on the transatlantic agenda. We achieved a number of concrete results. I will mention a few of them. This morning an agreement will be signed on control of chemical precursors for drugs, an important step for better controlling substances that are used for the production of synthetic drugs. We decided to step up our fight against drugs in the Caribbean. In the context of the transatlantic market place we will sign an agreement of custom cooperation that will facilitate trade and contribute to the
fight against fraud and corruption. We also reached an agreement of veterinary inspection to avoid a trade war which might have arisen on the export of meat. And further more we are very close to a mutual recognision of norms and standards. The so-called mutual recognision agreement"
SOT American president Bill Clinton (in english) "The Netherlands as current president of the EU once leading the way as the EU carrying forward its historic mission building the union among its members and reaching out to Eastern Europe. A more prosperous and united europe will be a stronger partner for US too. Through our work here we have taken another step to the plan of general Marshall. Working with people of Bosnia for peace. Recognising we must do more to speed up economic
reconstruction. Work for success of municipal elections and succes of war crime tribunal. The Dayton agreement is a good one. We have to make sure that is works. Under our new transatlantic agenda we will cooperate on a broad range of challengers; bringing down trade barriers fighting international crime. Now a new problem.. increased trafficking of women, which is a new sort of slavery. We will do everything to stop it.And finally let me say the USA is grateful to the EU leaders for
making this progress possible to build on the legacy that general Marshall began for strenghtening our partnership for democracy the challenges of the 21st century";
