6 cases were found in Sarasota County, Florida, and 1 case was found in Cameron County, Texas. Malaria cases in the U.S. are usually traced back to endemic areas like S.E. Asia, Brazil, or Subsaharan Africa. We had 8 cases of locally transmitted Malaria in 2003, but, prior to that, it was believed that locally transmitted Malaria had been eliminated since 1951.

-Malaria is spread by the female #AnophelesMosquito
-Fun Fact: Florida has 14 species of the Anopheles mosquito
-It usually takes 10-15 days to get symptoms after being bitten.
-Symptoms usually consist of fever, chills, headaches, body aches, and abdominal symptoms.
-Severe symptoms may include seizures, hallucinations, bleeding disorders, respiratory failure, and loss of life.
-There are prophylactic medications and treatments for Malaria.
-Diagnosis is by blood tests: light microscopy and rapid tests
-It is important to diagnose properly because there are several different types of Malaria, which may require different treatments
