Nave altera che in mezzo (Vinci) Ann Hallenberg

“Nave altera che in mezzo” from L'abbandono di Armida
by Leonardo Vinci (1690-1730)

Ann Hallenberg with Il pomo d’oro
Stefano Montanari, baroque violinist and conductor

Nave altera che in mezzo all’onde,
nell’orror di notte oscura,
agitata è da due venti ferma sta,
e non sa qual di lor la spinga al porto.

Così l’alma che si confonde
fra due stimoli possenti
pensa fra sé qual è
quel che giova al suo conforto.

If a proud ship out at sea
in the horror of a dark night
is rocked by two winds,
it stays motionless, not knowing
which may steer it to harbour.

Likewise, a soul torn
between two powerful impulses
is left wondering which one
will bring it comfort.

“Singers were usually contracted for a specified number of premiers, but after particularly successful seasons it was a custom in Venice to set up a special one-night-only performance for the last night of the carnival, which marked not only a conclusion to the festivities, but also presented highlights from the previous premiers of a particular theatre. To this purpose the Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo presented on Feb. 27th the short two-part festa teatrale L’ABBANDONO DI ARMIDA, a pasticcio (a work containing music by different composers) put together by Antonio Pollarolo, who also wrote the recitatives. The work consisted of three arias from CATONE IN UTICA and two from SEMIRAMIDE RICONOSCIUTA, but included also popular arias from earlier seasons (for example Porpora’s EZIO, which had concluded the previous autumn-season, and Albinoni’s DIDONE ABBANDONATA from the 1725 carnival) and several other arie di baule. One of these was Nave altera che in mezzo all'onde, by Leonardo Vinci, which was taken from his dramma per musica GISMONDO, RE DI POLONIA (Rome, 1727). It was originally a tenor aria, but was here sung by the only new member of the cast, the soprano Catterina Giorgi, who had arrived in town together with her husband, the tenor Filippo Giorgi, who was to perform during the coming spring season.” [from the liner notes by Holger Schmitt-Hallenberg, who also prepared the editions (Edition Gran Tonante HB).]
