Quest Complete! We Finished our DIY Sonos style Raspberry PI Based Amplifier, and it sounds great!
We have been on a quest to build a DIY Sonos-Style Raspberry PI based Amplifier. After slaying electric cicadas, and conquering DC-DC converters, today, we complete that quest!
Our amp features Bluetooth, Airplay and Spotify! It has a fancy custom paint job. Most importantly, it sounds pretty good.
I have learned many things on this journey. Firstly, it's probably just easier to buy an Amplifier from the store. But of course, that would never do. I learned a whole lot about digital potentiometers. Why are potentiometers so hard? The final design used a DS1841 module from Adafruit. I also learned a ton about DC-DC converters. In fact, the final amp design features 3 different DC-DC converters: a MP1584, a XL4015, and a linear LM317. These little stinkers are the main source of noise in the box.
Our whole project ended up costing about $150, if we discount all our hourly wages entirely. But who can put a price on the learning we've done? Actually, I think that's exactly what college's do, but we'll ignore that for now.
