Superior Midwest Energy Terminal

In 1992 I was privileged to visit the Superior Midwest Energy Terminal in Superior, Wisconsin. This facility was built by Detroit Edison to transfer Powder River Basin coal from rail to Great Lakes vessels for transport to their power plants at Monroe and St. Clair, Michigan. It can store up to 5 million tons in ground storage, and has the highest capacity single rotary dumper in the world. It can dump a 14,000 ton coal train at the rate of 5,000 tons per hour, and can load a 60.000 ton vessel in about 8 hours. We also got a tour of the Indiana Harbor, one of several vessels used in the coal trade from SMET to the lower lakes. It is powered by four EMD 645 20 cylinder engines. The video begins with a coal train passing Saunders, WI and follows the process through dumping to the docking and loading of the vessel. The final sequence shows the Walter A. McCarthy (sister shop to the Indiana Harbor) leaving SMET downbound through the Superior Entry headed for the lower lakes.
