Ore Deposits of Wyoming: Significant State & National Resources
Presented by: Simone Runyon,
University of Wyoming
Humans have been utilizing metals for thousands of years and recent technological advances continue to drive our need for metals in our everyday lives. Though the concept of exploration commonly conjures an image of a prospector with a pickaxe and a donkey, the way that we explore for, and develop, ore deposits has advanced significantly in the last century, decades, and even over the last few years.
Ore deposits are geochemical systems that are influenced by a variety of factors, including tectonic processes, magmatic intrusions, and even (in rare cases) asteroid impacts. In Wyoming, there is a long geologic history of ore deposit formation. In this talk, we will go over some of the basics of how metals concentrate in Earth’s upper crust and delve into a few fascinating stories of ore deposit formation in Wyoming.
