Here's what happened: YouTube gave me a Community Guidelines warning on one of my Friday night streams. They deleted the video before I could find out what the warning was about (still don't know exactly what caused it, and as per their policy you can't inquire about a deleted video, even one that they deleted). A few days later after my Tuesday Morning Coffee stream, they gave me a strike, citing Community Guidelines. And again, with no specific reason for the violation.

This is very frustrating as a DJ who has been posting to YouTube since its very early days and never ran into this type of problem. I do play other people's music, but in the past, this has been handled by YouTube's Content ID system. Through it, I give up the bulk of the monetization of my ad revenue to the creators of the music that I play. I trust in this system (even though there is very little detail about how the funds get distributed) and think it is fair that the creators of the music get royalties (or so I am told). I'd love to see some sort of model where I collect some sort of distribution fee, but perhaps that is something for the future. But regardless, this has never been a problem for me.

To be given strikes without being told exactly what for is simply unjust. If it's copy-written music, tell me which music! There have been times where I have posted videos that have musicians' works that their rights holders do not want shared (Jay-Z, Prince come to mind), and it simply gets blocked, and I am given the option to snip it out of my video. But these new actions taken by YouTube limit me greatly. I can't afford to jeopardize my channel (3 strikes, I'm out) trying to abide by rules that I don't know the boundaries of. So as a result, I will not be streaming to YouTube, possibly forever, but at least until the strike wears off (3 months from incident).
