Illegal tobacco trade ‘through the roof’ as Australia hikes cigarette taxes
Sky News host Caleb Bond says Australia’s illegal tobacco market is going “through the roof” as the government raises taxes on cigarettes.
His comments come after an IGA manager revealed the booming illicit trade was causing job losses with legal cigarette sales plummeting.
“Some 1,000 new illegal tobacco shops have opened in Victoria in the last year,” Mr Bond said.
“Gee, I wonder why.
“Maybe it’s because a packet of cigarettes costs you 40 dollars now.”
