How To Avoid Seemingly "Prestigious" Marketing Scams

I can't stand when business owners get taken advantage of. My close friends and family constantly send me emails with amazing, unsolicited offers of new awards, magazine features, and invites to speak at conferences. Every time, I show them why it's a scam or scheme and advise them to send it to SPAM. I wanted to do the same for you, so you can avoid a costly marketing scam.

I got an email the other day that invited me to be on this prestigious board of advisors for a major U.S. University. The offer sounded great! In fact, it sounded too great. 🤨

Like they say, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." Watch as I peel the proverbial offer onion and figure out that this was just a pyramid scheme waiting for the next sucker.

(00:00):
Okay. So as a business owner, you had to have gotten these emails or LinkedIn messages where all of a sudden you won an award congratulations, or, Hey, we're going to feature you in an industry magazine or Hey, would you like to join our industry panel or leadership panel? Because we could use your insights. Guess what? There's always a catch. There's no such thing as a free lunch, and I'm going to show you why, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is stay tuned.

(00:37):
Okay. So let me tell you a quick story. Now, as someone who works in marketing and my name is associated with larger brands, I get a lot of solicitations, right? ... So just the other day, someone reached out via email and they were with a very reputable university. I mean, one of the top 50 universities in the country with a great business school. And they invited me to join this advisory board. Now, when you think of advisory board, you're like, okay, I'm actually going to be on some leadership role.

(01:30):
That's really cool. I get to put that into my LinkedIn because everybody wants to add a title. I get to add that on my resume, which I haven't updated in 10 years, but it seems cool. Right? So first thing the alarm bell goes off. How did you find me? And that's the one question you have to ask? How did you find me? How did you come across my information? And then to what exactly is the opportunity? What is expected of me and what are you going to provide me in return? So there's gotta be, you know, that consideration mutual reciprocity. So fast forward, I have a call yesterday. And let me tell you something. If you guys ever do a sales call where you're trying to sell something, get to the point I had to sit there and the person on the phone asked me, Oh, are you looking out your window? Are you seeing it sunny? Wouldn't you like to be outside right now? I don't want to waste my time talking about what's outside the window. Tell me what's in it for me. Get to the point. Then the person goes, Oh, Oh, you're a YouTube host. And you run a nonprofit. I have to hear about that.

(02:39):
What is this? What is this call? I am so in the Twilight zone right now. I don't know where this is going or why I'm on the phone. But again, I'm polite. And I listen. Then I'm told about this wonderful person who leads this course and it's furthest university and he's done so many amazing things. What do I care? What's in it for me. Then I'm told about how the course has eight sections. And usually it's a four day boot camp and people will come to the university, but now it's virtual and they're doing it on zoom. What do I care? Get to the point what's in it for me.

(06:43):
So my friends, if it seems too good to be true, it is. If you ever get an email, if you ever get a solicitation and you have a question about it, send it to me. If I can help you figure it out, I most surely will. If I can't help you figure it out, then I'll help you ask the right questions to try to get to the bottom of it. But at the end of the day, I don't want you to be taken for your money. I want you to be putting your money into the right things, investing in your business. You should be investing in your business, your foundation, your services, your products, and your customer experience. Don't worry about all those bells and whistles. Don't worry about those shiny metals. People don't care at the end of the day. It's what you do in the customer experience you provide. So hopefully this helps here's to your success and stay well.
