Nikolai N. Cherepnin most distinguished himself with brilliant music for ballets. In addition, he loved to use Russian folk tales in his work. Alas, in 1921, after the collapse of the White Russian troops and the collapse of his last hopes, the wonderful composer and professor decided to share the fate of the Russian emigration and fled to Paris, where in 1925 he organized the Russian Conservatory, which in turn became one of the many centers of native culture for millions of Russian people. For those Russians who found themselves without their state, as if in a storm, thrown overboard a ship in distress.
Composer Cherepnin fled to the west with his wife, Maria Albertovna, whose maiden name was Benois. Maria’s brothers remained under the red regime and in 1938 one of the brothers was shot by Marxist fanatics, along with not only his wife, but also his children. The second brother of the composer’s wife was sent to a maximum security camp for 10 years; his further fate is unknown.
As for Nikolai Cherepnin, despite his low income in emigration, he helped financially even more needy people, Russian emigrants.
It is important to say about Russian national traditions and continuity: Professor Cherepnin called himself the grandson of Mr. Balakirev, since he studied with his follower namely Nikolai Andreevich Rimsky-Korsokov. This is one of millions of examples of how Russian tradition and continuity dissolved throughout the world in the 20th century, fleeing from communists.
