Alexander T. Grechaninov was saturated with Russian national culture, folk art. Nationalism was in him as a cultural routine and a need to continue national traditions. Soaking in Russian national culture was natural for him. It was not a flashy phenomenon in him. It was like a daily breath of air. Composer Grechaninov was a student of Mr. Rimsky-Korsakov and he was also the successor of the Russian traditional music school, which was completely out of fashion in the era of decadence and modernist pressure.
Alexander Tikhonovich enthusiastically accepted the democratic February revolution in 1917. He perceived it as the acquisition of new freedoms by the nation, and under inspiration he wrote the Anthem of Free Russia. But after the communist takeover in 1918, the composer did not want to leave Russia until the last moment. As he himself put it, he did not want to leave his "seriously ill mother." But years later under the dictatorship of the Marxists his hopes for a cure for the country disappeared. And in 1925 Alexander Tikhonovich managed to escape to Paris, where he wrote several more compositions. And with the outbreak of World War II the Russian emigrant fled further to New York and in 1950 he wrote the following: “I work a lot, in my works written here, as if my Russian nature is felt even more than in previous works, written at home“.
