Sapphire and Steel: Adventure 4 (ATV 1981) - titles/clip - "But you've seen my face."
Possibly one of the strangest TV shows ever made, Sapphire & Steel is a British television science-fiction fantasy series starring David McCallum as Steel and Joanna Lumley as Sapphire. Produced by ATV, it ran for six stories from 1979 to 1982 on the ITV network. The series was created by Peter J. Hammond who also wrote all the stories except for the fifth.
The programme centres on a pair of interdimensional operatives, the eponymous Sapphire and Steel. Very little is revealed about their purposes or backgrounds in the course of the series but they appear to be engaged in guarding the order, if not the integrity, of Time. They are two of several elements that assume human form and are sent to investigate strange events.
In the clip shown - from the 4th story - Sapphire and Steel are fighting a mysterious man who can escape through photographs as if they were like a network of tunnels. The man wears one of two faces, or no face at all. He can also release people from old photos (the girl with the parasol here) or trap them inside (Ruth, at the end of the clip).
Featuring: Joanna Lumley (Sapphire), David McCallum (Steel), Philip Bird (Shape), Natalie Hedges (Parasol girl), Steve Hudson (opening voice-over), Alyson Spiro (Liz), Shelagh Stephenson (Ruth), Bob Hornery (Shape).
