Pucón to the Argentine border at Mamuil Malal.

A spectacular drive from the holiday capital fo Chile, Pucón, to the Argentine border. Totoal distance: Some 75km. Excellent road conditions. Spectacular views of volcanoes and other mountains.
The trip starts at the foot of mt Villarica, a very active volcano. Villarica has an active lava pool and is almost always smoking. It is one of only five active lava pools in the world.
The next volcano is Quetrupillán but a little harder to spot as it is mostly hidden behind other mountains.
The road goes due east until the town of Curarrehue and then turns south to run through the lovely upper Trancura river valley. Here you pass between thw spectacular mountains. On the western side is El Colmillio del Diablo, the Devil's Tusk. This is an old extinct volcanic tube where the rest of the mountain has been eroded away. On the eastern side is La Peineta (The Little Comb) with multiple rocky towers.
Finaly one gets to the border post at the foot of the huge Mt Lanin. There are some enormous araucaria trees and in two places the road splits around some trees! These trees are very fire resistent and can live for 2500 years. Amazing to think that it started growing before Alexander the Great was born...
