QUICK!! WHAT YEAR WAS?? 'PET SOUNDS' - BEACH BOYS' RELEASED FRANKS BASS COVERS #musictrivia

Released July 18, 1966 from the album Pet Sounds

Bass Cover Notes:
Brian Wilson had at least 2 bassists playing on this song (see notes below) and added reverb on the 6 string. I thought I might add a 2nd & 3rd accompanying bass line and tried to play most of it on different parts of the fretboard than the main cover as an attempt to replicate the amazing full sound.

Self critical perspective:
I think I achieved the fullness but regrettably at the cost of distinguishing my bass from the song. What do you think?

The Song
"God Only Knows" is a pop music landmark and Beach Boys classic but vastly underappreciated at release when it peaked at a lowly #39 in September 1966

Written by Brian Wilson and Tony Asher, distinguished for its harmonic innovation and its subversion of typical pop music formula. It is often praised as one of the greatest songs ever written and as the Beach Boys' finest record.

It was first released as the B-side of "Wouldn't It Be Nice," and then as an A-side, but with little promotion. Fear was that radio stations would refuse to play a song with "God" in the title.

The lyric opens by saying, 'I may not always love you,' which is a very unusual way to start a love song.

Carl Wilson (Brian's brother) handled lead vocals on this track.

Brian Wilson produced the song, but the only Beach Boy to play an instrument on the track is Carl Wilson, who added guitar.

A total of 22 takes were attempted for the song.

The musicians struggled to play the instrumental break to Wilson's satisfaction. To address this issue, pianist Don Randi suggested to Wilson that they play the parts in staccato, rather than in full quarter notes. Wilson enjoyed the effect and incorporated the change.

Legacy:
Paul McCartney, called it "the greatest song ever written"
Pete Townshend: "'God Only Knows' is simple and elegant and as stunning as when it first appeared. It still sounds perfect."
Barry Gibb: "It blew the top of my head off. My first thought was, 'Oh, dear, I'm wasting my time. How can I ever compete with that?'"

Session musicians (also known as "the Wrecking Crew")
Bass Credits (3 bassists were credited / used:
Carol Kaye- bass and 12 string electric guitar
Ray Pohlman – 6 string electric bass guitar w/reverb played with pic
Lyle Ritz – upright bass

Hal Blaine – drums and sleigh bells
Jim Gordon – plastic orange juice cups
Don Randi – tack piano with taped strings
Alan Robinson – French horn

The famous French horn on this song is played by Alan Robinson.
He's appeared on the scores for many films, including The Sound of Music and The Ten Commandments.
He got the call for the session because he could play without music written out.
Brian Wilson sang him the horn line he had in mind, and Robinson played it by ear using a glissando technique suggested by Wilson.

Some very famous folks have covered this song or performed it live, including Elton John, Neil Diamond, Olivia Newton-John, David Bowie, Taylor Swift, Bryan Adams, Elvis Costello, Avenged Sevenfold, and Brandi Carlile.
