Sunset Boulevard - 1996 Toronto, CAN (Closing Performance)

August 18th, 1996
Diahann Carroll (Norma Desmond), Rex Smith (Joe Gillis), Anita Louise Combe (Betty Schaefer), Walter Charles (Max von Mayerling)
*Missing the scene between Sunset Boulevard and As If We Never Said Goodbye.

A nearly-full audience recording of the Toronto Company's final performance. The production moved on to play Vancouver's Ford Centre earlier than anticipated, making room for the pre-Broadway tryout of Ragtime. Sunset would play there until March 1997, the same month as the Broadway production's closing. The following excerpt is from Playbill's reporting on June 3rd, 1996:

"Of course I'm going to Vancouver" says Diahann Carroll, "I know I would die if I didn't work."... "I have no desire to leave Norma (Desmond) yet!" Norma Desmond is the role that Ms. Carroll, as she is called backstage, has coveted like nothing else for years. Despite the 700 stairs she goes up and down each performance, and the bad knees, (that still look great for any age..let alone 60!) and the ultrasound treatments on them regularly, and the ice packs for 15 minutes after every show, and the knee pads she wears on stage to keep her knee joints in place, Diahann Carroll loves the role.
