Why Matrices? Math for America Teacher Professional Development, Session 1 of 3 — Po-Shen Loh
Each Spring, Po-Shen Loh offers professional development mini-courses at Math for America, an organization committed to teachers, which builds and supports communities of teachers of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. He was scheduled to give 3 mini-courses this Spring, but their in-person meetings were canceled due to COVID-19. He will live-stream them instead from the Daily Challenge studio.
Math for America will provide an additional link to an interactive Zoom meeting to their official participants, who will then also be able to ask and answer questions by keeping both YouTube and Zoom open at the same time. The general public is welcome to watch the YouTube Live stream, which will send only the video and audio from Po-Shen Loh. These sessions are designed for math teachers who teach or are curious about matrices (often taught in Algebra 2 or Pre-Calculus).
Topic: Matrices can seem like mysterious objects. Why is the formula for matrix multiplication so strange? Are they good for anything besides solving systems of equations? Why is the determinant so complicated? We will discuss all of these topics, and more, to hopefully have more explanations for our students about why they too should care about matrices. This course will include problems which at first may not appear to have any connection with matrices, as well as discussions about the theory of matrices themselves.
