Contest 1: Guest Speaker Prof. Po-Shen Loh

Prof. Po-Shen Loh talks about surprising probabilities from an ordinary fair coin to an audience of mathletes. Prof. Loh is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Carnegie Mellon University, the national lead coach of the USA International Mathematical Olympiad team, and co-founder of expii.com, a new crowd-sourced educational technology platform which freely distributes interactive lessons in math and science over the Internet.

Prof. Loh has, since middle school, been highly involved with math contests. Among the many contests which he has nailed down, he has a 3rd place at the national MATHCOUNTS competition, a silver medal at the IMO, and he was on the ACM International Computer Programming Competition team which placed 7th at World Finals.

In his research, Po-Shen considers a variety of questions that lie at the intersection of combinatorics (the study of discrete systems), probability theory, and computer science. Randomness often manifests itself in the construction of a combinatorial system or algorithm, as in the case of a so-called "random graph", but intriguingly, it may also be artificially introduced as a proof technique to analyze purely deterministic systems, an approach pioneered by Paul Erdos.

Po-Shen received his undergraduate mathematics degree from Caltech (2004), his master's degree from Cambridge (2005), and his Ph.D. from Princeton (2010). He has been on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University ever since.
