2022 Poetry Out Loud - Virginia State Finals
Poetry Out Loud is a National Recitation Program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, immersing high school students in the powerful language of poetry. Poetry Out Loud provides students an opportunity to master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage through classical and contemporary works of poetry.
Each of the twelve contestants competed in a virtual semi-final competition. The three highest scoring students from each of those competitions were invited to compete at the state level.
The champion of the State Final receives $200 and the opportunity to compete for the top prize of $20,000 in the National Finals which will be again be held virtually. The semifinals will take place on May 1st and the nine finalists will compete on June 5th. Both events will stream live on arts.gov. The state champion will also receive $500 for the purchase of poetry books for his/her school. The first runner-up will receive $100 and a $200 stipend for his/her school library.
