Hello dear Friends welcome to MOPEG👋, in this tour we explored the area of Centocelle in the Prenestino-Centocelle district.
Centocelle is located in the east of the capital and is situated between Via Prenestina and Via Casilina and between Viale Palmiro Togliatti and Viale della Primavera.
The name Centocelle has been known for several centuries and derives from Centum Cellae, a military fortress built by Emperor Constantine I, which housed the knights of the imperial guard, the Equites Singulares Augusti, with their horses.
The building of the district began with the construction of the airport of the same name, the first in Italy, dating back to April 15, 1909. Part of the houses (some still existing) were the homes of military officers and non-commissioned officers of the airport.
In the forties Centocelle had as its central point Piazza dei Mirti and as its main street Via dei Castani, characterized by small low houses with one or two floors.
From the fifties until the seventies there was a period of great building expansion that changed the appearance of the district.
Today Centocelle has more than 50,000 inhabitants, several businesses and two stops of the subway line (line C) that connect this small "city" to the most central areas of the capital.
The district of Centocelle was mentioned by Pier Paolo Pasolini, in his novel "Ragazzi di vita" and in his first film "Accattone" of 1961.
Moreover, this neighborhood is linked to the singer-songwriter and musician Claudio Baglioni who lived in this area during his adolescence.
The names of the streets and squares of this area are mainly botanical, some examples are: via dei Castani, piazza dei Gerani, piazza dei Mirti, via dei Glicini, etc.
