Illustrator Tutorial: Flat Illustration With Grain And Noise Texture
You can add some dimension to your flat illustrations by adding a grain and noise texture inside Illustrator CC. In today’s video tutorial I’ll go over the 4 steps you need to take in order to design a flat illustration from scratch.
The first step is to sketch your idea out, I’m using my iPad Pro to try out concepts, but you don’t have to. In other videos you can see me sketching on a piece of paper with a regular pencil.
For this illustration I’ve wanted to explore the idea of creative burnout, since the final image was used for a medium post you can read here:

If you want to follow along and design the same thing as me, you can download the sketch and the vector file for free here:

After you’ve placed the sketch, it’s very important to lower its opacity and start tracing it using the Pen Tool (P) - but only use shades of grey till you’re happy with how the shapes are looking.
The third step is to apply colors to your illustration, I’ve found mine on Adobe Color Wheel:
https://color.adobe.com/create/color-wheel/
In order to texture to your illustration, I’ve used a technique I’ve seen done by Zimri Mayfield, where you can turn gradients into grain texture and use different blending modes to get to different results:

This has been a very cool personal project and I’m planning on doing more of these flat illustrations that have some texture to them since they seem to work so well for medium articles or blog posts.
