0.1.4 - Contexts: Social Contexts - LGBTQ+

This narrated Media Studies lesson introduces students to LGBTQ+ rights, social attitudes, and representation in ‘The Media’.

The lesson explores how context helps us understand Media Products, focusing on social, cultural, political, economic, and technological contexts. It then looks at LGBTQ+ rights in Britain, including the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1967, Section 28, civil partnerships, same-sex marriage, and the Equality Act 2010.

Students are introduced to key terms including LGBTQ+, sexuality, gender identity, biological sex, transgender, protected characteristics, and inclusivity. The lesson also considers how older Media Products sometimes reflected negative attitudes, and how modern media can represent LGBTQ+ people in more ordinary, open, and inclusive ways.

This video is aimed at GCSE Media Studies students and is particularly useful for introductory work on contexts, representation, social change, and ‘The Media’.
