In 2012 the chief engineer in charge of the development of the Tesla Model S decided to change airs and sign for a company then unknown, also dedicated to the manufacture of electric vehicles. His name was Lucid Motors.

It was not, however, until December 2016 when Lucid Motors became known when presenting its first electric vehicle project. The Lucid Air caused a remarkable expectation between the public and the media, being the first sedan of authentic luxury that had a fully electric propulsion system. Many hoped then to be able to see the Lucid Air circulating in the streets in not much time. However, more than 2 years later, this is something that has not yet happened.

First of all, Rawlinson wanted to make it clear that Lucid Motors is moving forward. In fact, they have more than 1 billion dollars from the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia to continue with the project. And its first objective is to start marketing Lucid Air, scheduled for the end of 2020.

This luxury sedan, with a price that will exceed 5 digits, is not going to be, however, more than the first step of a much more ambitious vision on the path that the electric vehicle must follow during the next decade. Surprisingly, and although the Lucid Air will have a battery capable of offering a range of over 600 km, Rawlinson believes that the path to follow is not to incorporate larger and larger batteries, if not just the opposite.

Lucid Motors is focusing all its efforts on the development of extraordinarily efficient engines, further improving aerodynamics to unimaginable levels, with the ultimate goal that its future vehicles be able to drive 5 miles (about 8 km) per kWh.

Rawlinson believes that if they are able to combine unknown efficiency levels so far with high availability of ultra-fast charging points, in that case no one will need a high capacity battery. As a consequence, Lucid Motors will then be able to market a luxury vehicle with a price lower than 30 thousand dollars.

Rawlinson explains his idea, stating that if there is a charging point in each corner, in which it is also possible to recharge 350 kW in minutes, who will need an autonomy of more than 240 km? If the vehicle is also capable of traveling 5 miles (about 8 km) per kWh, that means that a small battery of about 30 kWh would be more than enough.

Taking into account the expected drop in the price of the batteries over the next few years, the cost of a low capacity battery like this will then be tremendously affordable, greatly reducing the final vehicle cost.

To make this idea come true, Lucid Motors has been working on battery chemistry for some time, trying to make them able to tolerate repeated high-speed recharges without degradation. Additionally, they have an agreement with Electrify America, a network of charging points that, he explains, in a few years will have thousands of charging points in the United States.

In any case, Rawlinson clarifies that for this to be possible, a good brand image must first be created and this they hope to achieve with the Lucid Air.
