"It's a wild time. I'm lucky my job is to try to make sense of it all, showing how energy, climate, population, and the economy are related. Knowing how we got here helps us see where we’re headed and what to do.

This year, I've written a new book about power—how physical power, like energy and technology, and social power, like money and politics, are related. The project has led me to explore ways nature keeps power from getting over-concentrated. Those pathways are vital now, if we’re to step back from the cliff of extinction.

We humans can express our outsized tool-using and linguistic powers in ways that don’t destroy ecosystems or subjugate others. We could transition to a society where we take care of one another’s basic needs, and spend the rest of our time creating beauty. I know, that’s a long way from where we are. But we get there by committing to living happily within nature’s limits.
