Fendt Telehandler Cargo T955: Fly high

Yes, we should warn you about the limits of this industry-optimised machine in a farm setting. But hey, it was so much fun to work with - and we actually found the type of farm it fits on perfectly. Please like and subscribe!

---
Fendt’s Cargo T955 will never be every farmer’s darling and was never meant to be. But on some yards, it will raise eyebrows – and productivity.
While it certainly looks stunning, it does not wish to be reduced to its looks. In fact, two major selling points got overlooked by many in the first months of its life: Firstly, it brings the lifting power of a wheel loader, stemming up to 5.5 t, while being almost as slim and manouverable as some telehandlers.
Secondly, it makes long days easier to work through because the lifting arm of the cabin is spring-loaded. We found that out when taking the Cargo for a 40 kph sprint across a bumpy gravel road.
-
When you first look at the handler, you will notice the solid, thick steel plates in many places. This is where the Cargo has to admit to its secret. It is not actually a Fendt. In truth, you are looking at the 355E by Sennebogen, a Bavarian company about three hours drive away from the Fendt tractor plant. They have been selling the machine to harbours, landfills and other industrial sites with real heavy duty requirements for years. And that shows. Whatever problem you may face with this handler eventually – longevity of the hardware will not be one of them.
Now, Sennebogen have their 355E painted in nature green, hoping it will be the key to selling it in the primary sector as well. If Fendt detects demand, they may well extend the range.
Longevity, we dare predict, will also be a feature of the engine. The Cargo is currently the only Fendt that comes with a Cummins motor. The 4.5 litre, four cylinder diesel produces 167 hp rated output.
Climbing into the cabin is a tough sell to Fendt enthusiasts. Sennebogen have designed it in a – let’s call it - engineerial fashion. Everything works but nothing looks fancy. And Fendt haven’t covered Sennebogen‘s tracks – or, in fact, the steel frame. Our disenchantment soon turned into contempt, though, as we got to feel the power of the machine at work. For a while, we drove it of the farm and into a gravel pit, where we got to confirm its brakeaway torque of 85 kN and its ability to lift 4,85 t to 8.5 m of height.
As we progressed towards the trailer to offload gravel, we really tested the limits by simultaneously moving forward, lifting and extending the arm as well as lifting the cabin. The 200 l/min hydraulic pump by Bosch did not show any weaknesses whatsoever.
We, however, did. While it is unquestionably very helpful to see over the trailer‘s edge while unloading, having your head 4.2 m above ground requires some getting used to. The Cargo comes with all-wheel steer, meaning you can do a circle of under 4 m in diameter with the right wheels. With the cabin fully lifted, that is a bold thing to do. The ride got shaky when we had the cabin up and a full shovel of either gravel or substrate in the air.
On our way back to the pile, we found the bucket-return function useful. By push of a button, the Cargo will pull the arm back and bring the shovel into a previously saved angle.
One thing Fendt have yet to build in is an automatic door lock when the cabin is lifted.

Our verdict
The Cargo will handle anything from handling bales and filling the feed mixer to heavy lifting of grains, substrate or even gravel. At the same time, it is manouverable and very agile around the yard and in the barn. So on our test farm with dairy and biogas, it could replace the small loader, the telehandler and the wheel loader all in one go and safe a lot of getting-on-and-off-machines.
The 11.8 t empty weight machine is the smallest in the Sennebogen portfolio, but still on the large side for most current Fendt tractor operators. So if Fendt and Sennebogen really want to shift metal in the farming world, a smaller version would be in order.
