Ten-lined June beetle hissing
The ten-lined June beetle (Polyphylla decemlineata, also called a watermelon beetle, not because it eats watermelon but because it kinda looks like one) is a species of scarab found in western North America. When threatened (or poked, like I'm doing in the video) it hisses by forcing air out between its back and its wings, which I suppose must frighten off predators (certainly freaked me out the first time I picked one up). This is different from "stridulation", the method by which many other insects make sound. Enjoy!
