Section 8 residents bracing for the worst amid government shutdown

Tens of thousands of families across the country who live in government housing are wondering how long the federal shutdown will go on, impacting their lives.

As the longest government shutdown in U.S. history drags on, families relying on federal housing assistance in Charlotte are facing mounting anxiety about whether they'll be able to keep their homes.

For many low-income residents, Section 8 housing vouchers are the only barrier between stability and homelessness — and the uncertainty surrounding federal funding is taking a toll.

A Charlotte man who asked not to be fully identified said he never imagined he would need subsidized housing after working his entire life. But a cancer diagnosis 10 years ago changed everything.

"Cancer is very expensive. So now I'm having to start over, but thank God I'm still here," he said. "I had to start over again. I never thought I'd be in subsidized housing, but I'm grateful for it.
