What I've learned from my 3 trillion closest friends | Robin Shields-Cutler | TEDxGrinnellCollege

How do your friends support the way that you feel and think? When microbiologist Robin Shields-Cutler feeds his three trillion closest friends, they feed him in return. Of course he's talking about the complex ecosystem in his gut, an incredible community of bacteria which has an impact on physiology, immunity, and mental state, and helps digest food. We all have different microbial networks in our guts, and a tale of two tamarins demonstrates how an individual's gut dynamically responds to environmental changes.

Robin Shields-Cutler is a microbiologist at Macalester College. Understanding how microorganisms interact with humans is a unifying theme in the microbiology courses he teaches. In his classes, students have cultured sourdough starters and made bread, visited sewage treatment plants, and toured a local brewery. His research interests include microbial biodiversity in humans and non-human primates and how gut bacteria affect health.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
