The Power Of Play: Ian Livingstone at TEDxZurich

Play is our natural education from the moment we are born. We are playful by nature and we all have a natural curiosity to learn to solve problems. (Video) Games, other than books and films, put you in charge -- they are not a passive form of entertainment. Media and public have been convinced forever that video games are going to be the complete moral decay of the children who ware playing them. Nevertheless, games have moved to be a mainstream cultural phenomenon. Ian Livingstone makes the case that games actually are an educational source that must not be underestimated, and asks: Why can't learining be fun?!

Ian Livingstone is one of the founding fathers of the UK games industry. He co-founded iconic games company Games Workshop in 1975, launching Dungeons & Dragons in Europe and the Games Workshop retail chain. He co-authored Fighting Fantasy gamebooks which launched in 1982, selling over 17 million copies to date. His latest book Blood of the Zombies marked the 30th anniversary of the series. He designed Eureka, the first computer game published by Domark in 1984. He joined the company in 1992 as a major investor and director, overseeing a merger and public floatation that founded Eidos plc in 1995, where he served as Executive Chairman until 2002. At Eidos he launched world-famous franchises including Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. He co-authored the Next Gen review in 2011 published by NESTA, recommending changes in education policy to bring computer science into the national curriculum as an essential discipline. In the Wired 100 list for 2012, he was ranked the 16th most influential person in the UK's digital economy. He is currently Life President of Eidos, Vice Chair of UKIE, Chair of Playdemic, Chair of Skillset's Video Games Council, Co-Chair Next Gen Skills Committee, Member of the Creative Industries Council, Trustee of GamesAid and an advisor to the British Council. Ian was made an OBE in 2006, and has been awarded a BAFTA Special Award, a British Inspiration Award, the Develop Legend Award, an Honorary Doctorate of Arts by Bournemouth University and an Honorary Doctorate of Technology by Abertay University, Dundee for his contribution to the UK computer and video games industry.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
