In the late 1949 Roman Catholic priests in the United States performed a series of exorcisms on a fourteen year old boy, under the pseudonym Roland Doe. The boy had been plagued by paranormal activity in his home that included his bed shaking whenever he was in it, strange noises in the walls and heavy furniture sliding around in his presence.

His family sought help from Catholic priest William Bowdern, who believed the boy was possessed by the devil, and over a period of three months conducted more than 20 exorcism rituals on Roland at Cottage City, Maryland, and St Louis, Missouri.

Bowden recorded that during the sessions Roland entered a trance-like state, church relics were thrown to the floor and bloody scratched writing appeared on his body. After being admitted to hospital Bowden claims that Roland “broke into a violent tantrum of screaming, cursing, and voicing of Latin phrases” as Jesuit priests allegedly cast the demon out of his body and he was finally free.

The case was the inspiration for the 1971 novel The Exorcist that resulted in the 1973 horror movie classic of the same name.

Roland Doe's real name was later revealed as Ronald Edwin Hunkeler who as an adult was a Nasa engineer whose work contributed to the Apollo space missions of the 1960s…
