In February 1913 The Royal Flying Corps (later RAF) station at Montrose in Scotland was established.Based there was Maverick Irish pilot Lieutenant Desmond Arthur. However, his time there was short lived. At around 7:30 am on Tuesday 27 May 1913 Desmonds BE2 biplane unexpectedly plunged to the ground after its right wing snapped during its descent. He was thrown from the aircraft and died instantly. Initially Desmond was blamed for the crash…. something his spirit didn't seem to agree with.

Soon after his untimely demise Desmond’s ghost was sighted in and around Montrose air base. In fact his apparition became so frequent it caused guards to desert their posts and pilots to request transfers from Montrose. The hauntings continued until 1916 when Desmond was exonerated from causing the crash, when it was deemed to be the result of a damaged wing.

Things went quiet after the ruling, that is until the onset of the Second World War, when a whole new series of strange things started happening at Montrose. In 1940, a Hurricane pilot was distracted by a mysterious biplane whilst flying over Montrose.

In 1942, an unknown flight lieutenant stationed at Montrose crashed into the runway not long after takeoff, and was killed instantly. Shortly after the crash, there were reports of a ghost appearing at the airfield wearing a flying suit and goggles. The same ghost was encountered along the flight line, emerging from the fog. However perhaps the strangest incident happened in 1963 when Sir Peter Masefield witnessed a 70-horsepower B.E.2 biplane with a pilot wearing a leather flying helmet, goggles and scarf flying close to Montrose, he believed he saw the plane crash so quickly landed his plane, but when he reached the ground there was no plane or crash site.
