New at UH: Alumnus named to Astronaut Hall of Fame, Desalination Study, Safer Coastal Development

Bernard Harris, a University of Houston alumnus and the first African American to walk in space, will soon be inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame. Also, Devin Shaffer, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at UH, has developed a breakthrough membrane that lets water flow up to eight times faster while keeping out salt, making desalination more efficient. Finally, using radar imaging, researchers at UH have uncovered the reason why dozens of skyscrapers on Miami’s barrier islands are sinking – urban development. The findings may help develop tools for safer urban planning in geologically sensitive coastal areas.

Founded in 1927, the University of Houston is the largest public research university in Houston and one of the largest universities in Texas.
