How an Uber/Lyft driver should interact with a blind individual!
This was such a fun and educational ride! I have never had an Uber driver ever ask me questions about the best way for them to interact and assist someone who is blind. I loved this so much!
In addition to the things I mentioned in the video... such as... announcing to the blind individual that you have arrived and saying their name, always asking how you may be of assistance, would you like an elbow, helping them to find the door, maybe informing them on the type of vehicle you are in, avoiding touching the individual unless you ask first, and never grabbing the blind individuals guide dog harness handle, leash, or cane. The other helpful things you can do would be to give the blind individual descriptive information about the area you are dropping them off at. For instants, where the building is located in relation to the drop off, if there is a curb or sidewalk outside the car door, how many feet until they reach the entrance of the building. And make sure to ask if they need or would like further assistance with anything else before you end the ride and drive away.
Even though this video was talking about Uber/Lyft drivers, you can apply this anytime you are driving a family member or friend with a visual impairment. I promise, you’re blind and visually impaired friends will love you for it! Remember, we don’t like to be babied, but we do appreciate a helping hand, or helping eye 😉
