Cio Cio San, aka Madame Butterfly, fantasises to her maid Suzuki about the day her erstwhile husband, an American sailor by the name of Benjamin Pinkerton, will return to her "one fine day". By remarkable coincidence Pinkerton proceeds to return about half an hour later, though not so much to be reunited with his Japanese wife as to collect their son and take him to America with the American woman he's married in the intervening period. None too happy about any this, Cio Cio hands him over and then kills herself with a dagger. Pinkerton, relieved of the obligation to provide alimony, trips off back to America, where we all hope he gets cancer before being slowly run over by a bulldozer. The maid Suzuki goes back to making motorbikes.
