This historic, silent newsreel shows some of the highlights of the X Olympiad in Los Angeles. It begins with the parade of nations in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. At 2:13, the 800 meter run is seen, establishing a new world record of 1:49:08. At 3:03, the hammer toss is seen, and at 3:32 the 100 meter run (women). In this event Stella Walsh of Cleveland won, running for her native land of Poland — and in this era many of the "international" athletes attending the games were Americans who had strong connections to their homelands. At 4:13, Dallas' Mildred Didrickson wins the Javelin throw and establishes a new world record. The men's 100 meter dash is seen at 4:38, and the long jump at 5:13, and Discus at 5:41. Hurdles are seen at 6:40, and the hop, step and jump at 7:13. Didrikson is seen winning the 80 meter hurdles at 8:28. The marathon race is seen at 10:00, won by Juan Zaballa of Argentina. Swim events are seen starting at 11:14, including diving, at a stadium adjacent to the Coliseum. Equestrian events are seen at 16:00, including Major Yasushi Imamura of Japan riding Sonny Boy. The film ends with the extinguishing of the Olympic torch at 17:25. The 1932 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the X Olympiad, was a major worldwide multi-athletic event which was celebrated in 1932 in Los Angeles, California, United States. No other cities made a bid to host these Olympics. Held during the worldwide Great Depression, many nations and athletes were unable to pay for the trip to Los Angeles. Fewer than half the participants of the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam returned to compete in 1932. Even U.S. President Herbert Hoover skipped the event. The organizing committee put no record of the finances of the Games in their report, though contemporary newspapers reported that the Games had made a profit of US$1,000,000.
